Weekend Intelligence: October 30-31, 2010

October 30, 2010

Boo! It’s Halloweekend, and it’s shaping up to be a cold one here in central New Jersey. Time to rest up and curl up with some good reading material before the munchkins in costume start making their rounds.

  • Guys, you have it good – A great read in the Sydney Morning Herald that explains how solo travel is more difficult for women. In “Why female solo travelers get a raw deal” writer Ben Groundwater opines that “…when it comes to travel, women definitely get the rough end of the stick.” Do you agree?
  • Maybe you saw it in the news this week: film clip from 1928 shows what appears to be an old woman talking on a cell phone. Believe it…or not? Here’s the always entertaining Robert Reid of Lonely Planet and his take on time travel.
  • I’m not sure how I feel about the new “aggressive” pat down searches issued by the TSA as an alternative for passengers who opt not to go through the new full-body X-ray machines. Both methods make me feel like I’m being violated. I don’t see there’s much of a choice at all. How do you feel about it?
  • Being a solo traveler comes with some challenges: one person, one set of credit cards, one set of ID. If you lose your wallet or become the victim of theft, there are ways to guarantee you have access to your critical information at all times. Check out this article at on “How to Store Your Information Before Leaving Home.”
  • The Single Occupancy Weekly – This week, the featured story goes to Ayngelina of Bacon is Magic and her poignant post about how travel is helping her to discover what she wants out of life: “It’s an odd metaphor but traveling is akin to peeling an onion. I have been slowly shedding the layers that really don’t matter. Being in another country I no longer need to carry the self-imposed expectations of what I should be or what I should do. At times it’s been painful, dealing with raw feelings often resulting in tears, but things are slowly becoming clearer.” Read it. You know you want to.

Happy Halloweekend, all!
